The project Fortours aims to promote and valorize the heritage of defensive fortifications on the border between Spain and Portugal, specifically in the area of Alentejo, Algarve and western Andalusia. This initiative was approved in the first call of the Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Program (POCTEP 2014-2020).
The project has the participation of six entities: Ministry of Culture and Historical Heritage of the Government of Andalusia, who serves as project coordinator, Provincial Council of Huelva, the Algarve Regional Directorate of Culture, and the Municipal Chambers of Castro Marim, Alcoutim and Serpa. This multidisciplinary and cross-border collaboration allows for a comprehensive and enriching vision for the promotion and valorization of the historical and cultural heritage related to defensive fortifications in the border area.
Fortours has carried out activities of restoration, conservation and enhancement of the historical-defensive heritage for its opening to the public; and created two cross-border cultural routes. The first is the North Route, called «Late medieval fortifications of the Galician Band», which involves 16 castles; ylsecond is the South Route, call «Manorial Fortifications of the Flat Land», which also has 16 castles, in both cases located in the cross-border area.
territory has created the content and the App for the dissemination of the two cultural routes.
